timeline of company events

  • December 2nd, 2002:  A reading after a four-day workshop of Tale of A Mask by Terry Watada.
  • July 10th, 2003: After a two-week intensive workshop, the long awaited adaptation of Leon’s Aureus’ Banana Boys (the novel by Terry Woo) receives a sold out reading at Buddies In Bad Times Theatre.
  • August 7 – 17th, 2003: fu-GEN produces filial by David Yee at the 2003 SummerWorks Festival.
  • March 18th, 2004: fu-GEN’s first annual Potluck Festival, a one night staged reading series of new plays by fu-GEN’s playwrights unit called The Kitchen. Playwrights included: Leon Aureus, Jo Chim, In-Surp Choi, Kent Lam, Richard Lee and David Yee.
  • September 18th, 2004: Opening Night of the long awaited World Premiere of Banana Boys by Leon Aureus and the play receives sold out houses and critical acclaim. The company receives its first Dora Mavor Moore nomination for Outstanding Sound Design in the Independent Theatre Category.
  • April 9th, 2005: fu-GEN’s second annual Potluck Festival featuring staged readings of excerpts from fu-GEN’s playwrights unit. Playwrights included: Byron Abalos, David Eng, Christina Florencio, Stephanie Law, Christine Miguel and Norman Yeung.
  • June 9th, 2005: fu-GEN is invited to perform Banana Boys at the prestigious Magnetic North Theatre Festival. The play receives much praise from local and international audience members alike.
  • September 22nd, 2005: Banana Boys returns, this time as a co-production with Factory Theatre as an official part of Factory Theatre’s 05/06 season. The play garners its second Dora Mavor Moore Nomination in the General Theatre Category for the outstanding work by the acting ensemble.
  • October 28th, 2005: After a two-week intensive workshop, fu-GEN presented a two-day reading of its sophomore production of Singkil by Catherine Hernandez.
  • April 5th, 2006: fu-GEN’s third annual Potluck featuring staged readings of excerpts from fu-GEN’s playwrights unit. Playwrights included: In-Surp Choi, Jane Luk, Susan Aceron, Daniel Christopher Chen, Mia Grace Kim, Zoë Huang and Dale Yim.
  • January 11th, 2007: fu-GEN’s long awaited second production Singkil opens to rave reviews and much acclaim. The production (in association with Factory Theatre) receives an incredible 7 Dora Mavor Moore nominations in the categories of Outstanding Production, New Play, Direction, Performances (both male and female), Set Design, and Sound Design.
  • May 4th, 2007: fu-GEN’s fourth annual Potluck featuring staged readings of excerpts from fu-GEN’s playwrights unit. Playwrights included: Laura Kim, Camellia Koo, Edward Lee, Lena Lee, Lisa Li, Dean Vargas, and Christina Wong.
  • August 2nd – 12th, 2007: fu-GEN brings paper series by David Yee to life at the 2007 SummerWorks Theatre Festival. The show was a SummerWorks success with word of mouth buzz that shot through the patrons at the festivals.
  • August 25th, 2007: paper series returns for a one night full house engagement at the DARK, a free performance festival, curated by Marjorie Chan and Sponsored by Toronto Culture’s Live With Culture program.
  • June 20th-29th, 2008: fu-GEN produces the 5th Annual Potluck Festival, the first ever 2-week long Asian-Canadian new play festival featuring readings of new plays by Byron Abalos, Marie-Leofeli R. Barlizo, Insurp Choi, Jovanni Sy, Terry Watada, David Yee, Norman Lup-Man Yeung and K5, fu-GEN’s playwright Kitchen (Karl Ang,  Wayne Sujo, Titus Leung, Diana Tso, Yaya Yao, Jeff Yung)
  • November, 12th-15th, 2008: Hart House Theatre and the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts presents a remount of Banana Boys at Hart House Theatre that plays to sold out audiences.
  • January 24th-February 21st, 2009: fu-GEN, in association with the Young Centre for the Performing Arts, produces the World Premiere of David Yee’s lady in the red dress, which draws fu-GEN’s largest audience ever and enjoys critical success with 7 Dora Mavor Moore Nominations (Outstanding Production, Best New Play, Best Direction, Outstanding Set Design, Outstanding Lighting Design, Outstanding Sound Design and Outstanding Performance by a Male).
  • May 7, 2009: fu-GEN’s 6th Annual Potluck Festival sells out the Factory Studio Theatre with an evening featuring excerpt readings from K6. Playwrights included: Reese Baguio, Loreli Buenaventura, Rain Chan, Andrew Cheng, Allison Chung, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Andrea Mapili, Hiromi Okuyama and Donald Woo.
  • May 3 - 9 2010: fu-GEN Asian-Canadian Theatre Company in association with Factory Theatre presents The 7th Annual Potluck Festival featuring GENesis: Asian-Canadian Theatre Conference co-sponsored by fu-GEN and the University of Guelph. This historic week marked the first ever Asian-Canadian Theatre Conference and the largest gathering of professional Asian-Canadian Theatre artists.
